How often do you practice? Two times each week, in 150 shoe sessions. What year did you join the KHPA? July 2008.How did you get started in horseshoes? I enjoy walking at Easy Walker Park. I noticed some men throwing horseshoes in clay. Wow! I thought. That may be something I would enjoy. I stopped and spoke with Don Hayes. He offered to allow me to pitch a pair of his shoes. I didn’t pitch very well. I enjoy a challenge. So I did join the league and am gradually improving my skill.
What do you enjoy most about the sport of horseshoes? ? I’ve always had the attitude there is always someone out there I would like to meet. I have met some wonderful people, from the very young and the more mature (notice I didn’t say old)! The majority truly enjoy the sport and are always willing to give a helping hand, encourage and congratulate their fellow pitchers. The fellowship we share is one of God’s richest Blessings! What is your biggest pet peeve while pitching? Allowing my mind to wonder to something else and not concentrate fully on pitching a shoe, causing my own distraction.
What are your goals to achieve in horseshoe pitching? The most valuable goal I would like to achieve would be to pitch the same more consistently. My ringer percentage would increase and perhaps I would place in the top three more often. Along the way I would like to continue to be a good sportsman and except winning and losing graciously! Another asset would be always willing to encourage the long time pitcher as well as the novice. I would also like to become the mentor that Don Hayes is! He has a good word for everyone and always saying, “you can do it”!What is your biggest accomplishment? A very important accomplishment for me was when I pitched two 30% games at a tournament in Middlefield, Ohio on February 14, 2009. I won the tournament after a playoff with Lasure. I did have some encouragement from three of my Grandchildren. When I would get a ringer, they would yell, “yaaa Papa”, and throw up their hand! What is your biggest disappointment? My biggest disappointment is when I pitch 50 shoes and only hit one ringer! It is a disappointment, but I have only myself to blame. Concentrate, concentrate, concentrate. What pitcher has most influenced your game and how? Don Hayes , Director of the Mount Sterling League has been very influential in building my love for the game of horseshoes. He continues to encourage me and says, “ you will become a good pitcher”, “get that shoe up and let her go”! He will inform me when I pitch well and also let me know when I slack off! He can give constructive criticism and not let me know he is chewing my butt out for not doing well! He is always giving me suggestions on how I may be able to pitch more effectively. He is a good Sportsman, has a wonderful personality and has become a good friend! Thanks Don!Who is your toughest pitching opponent? Every opponent is very challenging, but I’m probably my own worst enemy. If I don’t pitch well, I can only blame yours truly.
