How often do you practice? I pitch four shoes at a time, once a week in the summer, I try to pitch on the hottest days and I will pitch until my fingers bleed = around six hours.What year did you join the KHPA? 1976 How did you get started in horseshoes? My father was KHPA secretary and I was always around the game.What do you enjoy most about the sport of horseshoes? I like the smell of the clay. The night before a big tournament. The history of the game. The people I meet through the years. The challenge of keeping my percentage up. And most of all I like changing my turns, stance, shoes, sides of the pit and learning new ways to get ringers and totally messing my competive game up, just to learn it over again.
What is your biggest pet peeve while pitching? Scorekeepers who dont pay attention. Rain,snow,sleet,wind ect. Those hidden burrs and one stake on one end 22 inches long and the other end 9 inches long.
What are your goals to achieve in horseshoe pitching? To be competitive. What is your biggest accomplishment? 1986 jr world champ. What is your biggest disappointment? Rained out tournaments. Poorly pitched tournaments. In 2001 I missed a perfect game against Doug Ray of Indiana by one ringer, I had 17 of 18, last ringer of the game hopped off.
What pitcher has most influenced your game and how? I could write a book about this question. I try to watch all the good players and pick up on their styles and then tinker around at home with different techniques. Who is your toughest pitching opponent? Too many of them = Charlie Meredith, Ronnie Powell, Sue Snyder, Becky Kemper always kills me. Lois Webster, Matt Guy, Walter Mullins, Forrest Cooper always shoots good against me, Ed Henry, Jim Culver, RZ Miller, and most all out of state players are always tuff. Way too many to mention just one. Oh wait a minute I know the worst opponent I ever faced with out a doubt was myself.

Twice a week, in 150 shoe sessions..What year did you join the KHPA? 1975.How did you get started in horseshoes? ? I was introduced to the sport of horseshoe pitching by Dallas Walters. At that time we pitched behind Rube Blevins’ grocery store in Bath County. In 1981 we built six courts in Grassy Lick, KY. Joe Minnick was State Secretary and we pitched to 50 points each game. All had pitched their highest percentage game at Grassy Lick. The Mt. Sterling courts were installed in 1998.What do you enjoy most about the sport of horseshoes? I enjoy the comradery of the other members. I attend many tournaments and look forward to the fellowship we share.What is your biggest pet peeve while pitching? Not concentrating on pitching and thinking about other things!
What are your goals to achieve in horseshoe pitching? Getting Better!!!!! Hopefully to increase my percentage! I would like to continue being a good sportsman. Constantly encourage others to participate in the sport!What is your biggest accomplishment? ? I feel that starting the Mt. Sterling Horseshoe Pitching Club was a great accomplishment. I could not have done it without the help and input of Vicki Belcher. Thank You, Vicki! In the 2005 Kentucky State Tournament I was Champion in C-Class with a 41% average and 56% High Game.What is your biggest disappointment? As of now I am unhappy with the average I am attaining. I feel I can do better! Just get to It!What pitcher has most influenced your game and how? ? All the good horseshoe pitchers have influenced my game in one way or another, especially with the challenge in pitching with each one. I also enjoy watching Art Jackson and his desire to improve his game and form. I know he will become a good pitcher.Who is your toughest pitching opponent? Myself! I never doubt that each opponent is a challenge!
